Hillside Concert Series in Berkeley
SOLD OUT
Violin, Viola & Video Virtuosity at Hillside Concerts
International new music violinist Karen Bentley Pollick returns to Hillside Concerts after recent performances at the “Music of Changes” festival in Klaipeda, Lithuania, SPECTRUMNYC, Wayward Music Series in Seattle, and Alive: New Music at The Dairy Center in Boulder, with a diverse program fusing music and videos from Lithuania, Germany, France, and America.
In addition, she will be joined by Finnish pianist Marja Mutru in presenting the preview of a piano/violin reinterpretation of David A. Jaffe’s concerto for violin and orchestra, “How Did It Get So Late So Soon?,” written for Karen and premiered in August 2016 with the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre Orchestra, and in the U.S. with the Boulder Chamber Orchestra. Karen will also be featuring Jaffe’s “Cluck Old Hen Variations” which was composed in Bob Cowart’s house in 2004.
Ethereal Baltic harmonies haunt Žibuoklė Martinaitytė’s ‘Serenity Diptychs’. Stuart Diamond creates contemplative and insightful videos to both the epic Ciaccona by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Dominique de Williencourt’s soulfully evocative ‘Mont Ararat’ that simulates a duo of duduks on scordatura viola. David A. Jaffe’s Cluck Old Hen Variations merge Appalachian folk fiddling with Paganini, composed downstairs in the venue of the house concert.
The complete program is as follows:
Serenity Diptychs for violin, tape, and still images (2015) by Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė. Photographic imagery and video by Philip VanKeuren; visual and digital production by Melissa Tran
Ciaccona from Partita #2 in D minor, BWV 1004 (1720) by Johann Sebastian Bach. Video by Stuart Diamond (2017) [World Premiere]
Mont Ararat for solo viola (2011) by French composer Dominique de Williencourt. Video by Stuart Diamond (2017) [World Premiere]
Cluck Old Hen Variations for solo violin (2004) by Berkeley composer David A. Jaffe.
How Did It Get So Late So Soon? – an homage to Dr. Seuss (2017), new version for violin and piano by David A. Jaffe, based on his 2016 violin concerto
Movements 2 and 3 (“The Zax” and “The Sneetches”) [Preview Performance]

International new music violinist Karen Bentley Pollick returns to CCRMA after recent performances at the “Music of Changes” festival in Klaipeda, Lithuania, SPECTRUMNYC, Wayward Music Series in Seattle, and Alive: New Music at The Dairy Center in Boulder, with a diverse program fusing music and videos from Lithuania, Germany, France, and Venezuela.
Venezuelan composer Servio Marin continues his foray into visonuality by fusing music, theatre, performance arts, multimedia, and dance. His new piece Sonic Talismans explores visual and aural interrelations, studying and analyzing the physics of sound by itself, as well as the role it plays inside the context of several music repertory languages.
A visonual work is like a living picture, a visual-sound poem in which the viewer is invited to enter, and is subtly enveloped by an impregnating drizzle of sense.
