Aftermath (2017) for solo violin by Tom Flaherty

Aftermath reflects the familiar emotions that we all feel following a traumatic blow, whether due to lost love, life, or significant election. Anguish, resignation, anger, fond memories of the past, anxiety for the future, all mix uncontrollably. for an unpredictable amount of time.

Aftermath was written in the early days of 2017, for the radiant Rachel Huang, and for the rest of us.

NEW RELEASE: September 1st 2023

Virko Baley was born in Ukraine in 1938 and came to the USA as a refugee in 1949, eventually making his home in Las Vegas. He has long been fascinated by the poetry of Emily Dickinson, as can be heard in the two moving works recorded here – one an orchestral song-cycle setting her texts, the other a suite for violin and piano inspired by those settings. They display an acute ear for orchestral colour, a fondness for dramatic gesture and a strong sense of lyricism, occasionally inflected by distant echoes of Baley’s eastern European origins, the richness of the song- cycle placing him downstream from Mahler and Berg and the restraint of the Songs without Words occasionally evoking Arvo Pärt.

Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival
Karen Bentley Pollick, violin & Hardangerfele

Experience a unique event with a traditional Norwegian flair!  Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival’s favorite Norwegian sibling pair, Julie, and David Coucheron, bring their native roots to Amelia Island in a program featuring both the traditional Hardanger fiddle and violin paired with cello, piano and traditional Norwegian dance.

The program includes the Handel Halvorsen beloved Passacaglia, Grieg’s most famous violin and piano Sonata #3, and traditional Norwegian folk music performed on the ancient and rare Hardanger fiddle originating from 1651.
